How to Grow Avocados – The Easy Way

Avocados

Are you new to the gardening world?

Are you looking for an easy to grow plant that you can eat?

For most of us, it is the end of the work week and the beginning of the holiday weekend. First, let me start off by saying Happy 4th of July. I hope you enjoy a safe holiday.

Today, is Beginner Wednesday. That means we have found something that is easy to plant and if you’re new to gardening – it’s perfect for you. Did you know you can actually grow your own avocados? Not only that, but there is a way that makes it really easy.

What you need to know about growing avocados the easy way.

  • Buy a mature avocado plant from a garden nursery. If you try to grow the avocado plant from seedling, it could take up to 7 years to produce any fruit. The more mature the tree, the sooner you will get to eat avocados.

Hubpages has a great recommendation about the placement of the tree:

Do not plant an avocado in the lawn, as it will not grow well in competition with grass. It should be in a garden with plenty of compost, and sheltered from frost and wind. Each tree needs from 1/3 to ½ a pound of nitrogen annually, but not all at once.”

  • Avocados need lots of water. Install Rootsticks all around the smaller trees. As the trees grow larger, install Rootwell Pro318s. Both Rootsticks and the Rootwell Pro318 are a direct to root water system that promotes root growth and tree growth. This process will provide you with the best avocados you can grow and will make watering easier.
  • If you are unable to plant avocados in a garden because you live in an apartment or your neighborhood doesn’t allow for gardens, you can grow the avocados out of a container. If you want the tree to bare fruit, you will have to put it outside during the summer for the pollination process.

Have you ever tried to grow an avocado tree? I would love to hear about it in the comments below. Have a wonderful holiday everyone and we will see you right back here on Friday.
